DIY Pom Pom Mobile Tutorial

I created this beautiful and inexpensive mobile for our daughter's nursery with two simple craft supplies - yarn and an embroidery hoop.

1. Start by making all of your pom poms. I made them in a variety of different sizes for my mobile (in total I made 35 pom poms).

diy pom pom mobile tutorial, crafts, how to

2. Wrap the yarn around your fingers (I used two fingers for a small pom pom, three fingers for a slightly larger pom pom and four fingers for the largest size). I wrapped the yarn around my fingers about 90 - 100 times.
3. Cut another piece of yarn in the same colour (about 6 inches long). Thread the yarn between your fingers, tying once loosely. Slide the yarn off of your fingers and tighten the yarn to ensure a secure knot.
4. Using scissors cut through the loops on both sides.
5. Fluff the yarn to form a full pom pom.
6. Trim the yarn to create a uniform looking shape.

Next, take apart the embroidery hoop and use the inside hoop (without the metal piece) and wrap the it in yarn.

diy pom pom mobile tutorial, crafts, how to

Cut five pieces of yarn to your desired length (these pieces should be long enough to gather together and tie at the very top of your mobile and hang as long as you wish at the bottom).
Lay out each piece of yarn and determine the order you'd like your pom poms to be in (consider size and colour). Once you are happy with the appearance of your mobile, begin tying the pom poms to the string of yarn by looping it through the piece of yarn used to tie the pom pom in Step 2. Start at the top of the mobile and work your way down. I added one pom pom at the top centre (where all five pieces of yarn meet) and two per piece of yarn before I hit the embroidery hoop.

diy pom pom mobile tutorial, crafts, how to

Tie each piece of yarn around the embroidery hoop and finish with a pom pom (this is where I used the largest size). Continue tying on pom poms until you reach the bottom of the yarn.

We secured the mobile on the ceiling with an eye hook. Remember to keep the mobile out of reach of your baby, and ensure your mobile is secure so that no pieces are able to fall into the crib.

Christmas Wreath Made From Wood Biscuits Found in the Tool Department

The inspiration for this wreath was found in the tool department at Home Depot while shopping with my husband.

I saw several containers of wood biscuits used for miter joints and thought of how similar they look to leaves. I was able to find a flat wood wreath form at Michaels.

It was very easy to attach the wood biscuits using a glue gun.

This wreath would look very good painted all green or any other color as the base color, but I wanted to see what it would look like with stain and gold accents. However, after two coats of stain and randomly painting some of the leaves with gold metallic paint, I just wasn't convinced it was the right look.

In the end, I added some green and white paint as accent colors to the stained and gold leaves. My husband suggested the bright red bow as the final touch.

TV Cabinet Makeover : Vertical Unit to Horizontal Media Center

Hello Happy Hometalkers. Meet Tripod, the three legged chest. This sweet old guy has been in our family for over 20 years and has faithfully held a TV and numerous video games. My son and his little friends literally grew up in front of Tripod.

Then, when the sunroom (AKA the She-Cave) came to be, Tripod was moved to the sunroom in order to house my 20-plus-year-old box TV. Ok. I know, but the TV worked....so it was OK for me.

Now, fast-forward to the sunroom refresh. Actually, when the refresh began, I never thought in a million years that a vintage boxspring would end up on one wall and a 59-inch flatscreen TV on the other.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling

I mean, after all, this was a She-Cave and big, gauty flatsceens, like boys, were not allowed. But, oh my gosh, here we are. Now, don't get me wrong, the boxspring is one of my favorite things ev-ah. The link to this curbside rescue is here. https://thechelseaprojectblog.wordpress.com/2015/10/18/vintage-boxspring-to-wall-art/

And, the flatscreen is a true hand-me-down. Or, should I say hand-me-up....since it came from the basement? LOL. Apparently, the reason that the TV was no longer acceptable was that a few pixels had stopped working and the receiver had died altogether.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling

The next thing I knew, the keepers of the Man-Cave were hauling this monstrosity to the sunroom and Tripod to the garage.
And I was left to figure out how to decorate around this huge jet-black blob, hide those vulgar wires, recover the lost storage space, and SAVE Tripod.
Turns out, it wasn't such a big deal. All this sweet old cabinet needed was four easy building steps and a final coat of color.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling

First, remove the original legs and either reattach them to the side or use new legs.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling, Step 1 Remove old legs attach legs to side

Since I needed the unit to be taller, I bought legs that are 6 inches high. I also bought the installation plates. Doing this made the leg attachment process super quick and easy.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling, More Step 1 New Curvy legs

Next, two drawers were removed so a fake front was added on a section of one end to cover the holes. And, the cover had to match the look on the other end. Surprisingly, this step was very easy to accomplish. Then, the new wood was stained to match the original color of the unit.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling, Step 2 Throw on a fake front

As for the third step, I won't lie. It was a little bit more difficult, but still just a cut and glue process. Faux shiplap that matched the other end was ripped and then glued to a frame that had been attached to the unit. And then, the bottom was stained to match the original wood color.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling, Step 3 Create a false bottom

The last building step was super simple. A piece of plywood was cut, sanded, and caulked into place. I didn't realize I needed to close the top until the unit was already back in the sunroom, but when everything placed on the surface sat whacky, the last step was added.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling, Step 4 Add a flat top

After two coats of chalk paint, the repairs seemed to disappear.

And now, in its new life, Tripod will house cushions for the outdoor furniture and balance the visual impact of the flatscreen.

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling

This is the second TV cabinet that I reconstructed to use as another piece. The first piece was halved and the bottom portion installed as a kitchen cabinet. The before and after on that unit is at this link. https://thechelseaprojectblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/24/tv-cabinet-turned-kitchen-cabinet-with-fusion-mineral-paint/

tv cabinet makeover verticle unit to horizontal media center, diy, entertainment rec rooms, painted furniture, repurposing upcycling

After this TV unit makeover, I will still have 3 and 1/2 units to makeover! Can you believe it? And, every single one of these units will be repurposed into something that is needed for our home.
I hope you will stay tuned for these updates. In the meantime, please enjoy more photos and detailed information at the URL below.
