I was recently sent some Folk Art Decor Chalk paint and Ultra Matte Chalk Mod Podge for a sponsored post, and I was giddy to play with it! I took an old nightstand I purchased at the flea market and gave it a new look first by removing that old veneer that was letting the piece down and then giving it a faux vintage paint job. Texture added to the drawer fronts make it look like a very expensive piece because the drawers appear carved. I'm in love with this cutie now! Here's the before. Dang. The veneer was splitting and coming off but I purchased the piece because it's solid wood with dovetail joints. You can make something ugly pretty but you can't fake good bones for a piece!
My quick tip for removing veneer on the tricky places is to put a hot iron on the veneer and allow to sit for a bit. Using a metal scraper you can peel away the veneer easily after the heat has loosened up the glue.
I used the chalk in Tuscan Red...
...and Java.
Textured paper from the art store was applied to the drawers using the Mod Podge chalk formula...
...painted...
...and aged with antique wax.
In the end the drawers are amazing and stand out so well!
The drawer hardware was left alone when I realized that cleaning and faux aging them up seemed a silly waste of time!
The drawers painted on the sides and interior give the piece an upscale look and the dark color actually makes finding things inside a bit easier.
Even if you're uncomfortable with chalk paint, this was so simple. I have failed at furniture makeovers because I can't seem to get waxing the piece right but this was a huge win! I hope you'll see more details over at the blog!
