I recently decided to transform a "hand-me-down" piece of furniture that had been sitting in my garage and collecting dust for quite some time.My mother gave me an antique curio cabinet years ago. She used to be a shabby chic fanatic, but she decided to branch out to more modern decor. And, as always, I adopted this poor little piece of orphan furniture .
While there was nothing wrong with the way it looked, it just did not fit the vibe of my home. But, I also felt guilty at the thought of selling it. I know you antique loyalists are going to want to kill me, but I tossed my guilt out the window and decided to paint the cabinet.
I thought by painting it dark gray, it would look more contemporary and better suit my style. Ehh...it still was not working for me.
Then I came across this gorgeous piece on Pinterest and was inspired. I decided to try to adapt the style of this cabinet to fit my needs.
I used a mixture of milk paint and latex paint for the wood. For the glass, I spray painted it with "mirror effect" spray paint. I also changed the wood detailing (which kind of came as the result of an accident).
Here is the finished product. Now that the once transparent glass is mirrored, this curio cabinet provides some much needed storage space... I no longer have to worry about making all of the items in the piece "pretty".
And for all of you wanting to shame me for tampering with an antique, just be glad I kept the piece and made it my own. I didn't toss it out and abandon it.
